60 days: Your morning briefing on the regular session of the West Virginia Legislature
Hello from 60 Days and thanks for subscribing. (That said, if you’ve arrived here on the web and didn’t get this newsletter in your inbox, now would be the perfect time to sign up.)
Handing over your email address to a couple of guys who may or may not be up to no good is no small thing.
Thanks for trusting us.
You’re an “early adopter,” as they say. And by that I mean you’ve got a ringside seat from the get-go as Dave and I work the kinks out of this newsletter.
Since you subscribed sight unseen, Dave and I thought we should let you know what you’re getting into. We’ve got a lot of ideas. In fact, we keep getting sidetracked by them. But for now we keep circling back to a tip sheet sort of thing.
We’re planning a Monday through Friday publication that you can expect to hit your inbox while you’re sipping your morning coffee. We’ll tell you where the major bills stand and what the major players are up to. We’ll also focus on some of the broader themes we’ve noticed and give you a preview of what to expect each day.
And, if you happen to trust us enough with a tip that would somehow lead to investigative reporting prestige and early retirements, we’d certainly entertain that, too. You can get in touch at 60Daysgilesdave@gmail.com or simply hit the comment button.
While we’ll be happy to accept tips, the plan is to keep 60 Days short and sweet—something easy to digest so you can get out the door and on your way.
A tip sheet seems like the best way to accomplish that. And to be honest, it works for us as well. We have our own day jobs, after all. We’ll be working on this in our spare time.
While we won’t be falling over ourselves to get news from Charleston out first or give it to you in a long, drawn-out format, you can depend on us to slip into your inbox with an easy to read newsletter each morning during the session.
There’s not much here now. But we’ll send you a few editions before the session kicks off — not only to set the stage but to also get our bearings.
And we’re going to need your help in getting the word out about 60 Days. You can’t really do that if you don’t have anything to share.
By the way, the inspiration for the 60 Days name is taken from the 60 days that West Virginia lawmakers meet in their regular legislative session each year.
The next session begins in less than two months, on January 11th, 2023,
Buckle up.
Take it from us, those 60 Days go by fast.
In our previous lives, Dave and I each covered the West Virginia Legislature as journalists at West Virginia Public Broadcasting. Also, we both went to school at Marshall University in Huntington and now we work at NPR, in the Newscast Unit.
You might think that means we’ve known each other for ages. But I’m the senior partner. And by that I simply mean, I’m older. Our lives as adults may have followed a similar trajectory, but we traveled roughly the same career path in different eras. We’ve only gotten to know each other over the past few years.
Anyway, this newsletter is completely free. Dave and I came up through public media and believe our work should be available to anyone who stumbles upon it. But if you find that you value what we’re doing, we won’t turn away a tip or two.
Hit the button, buy us a coffee and we’ll see you back here soon.
